Shady Attia

 

Shady Attia is an Assistant Professor of Sustainable Architecture & Building Technology at the Faculty of Applied Sciences of Liège University in Belgium. He is heading the Sustainable Buildings Design Laboratory that he launched in 2014. Before joining Liège University as a faculty, he was a research scientist at the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering of EPFL (ENAC). He was a member of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Performance-Integrated Design (LIPID).

Shady Attia owns a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering from Helwan University in Cairo, Egypt and a Master of Science in Landscape Architecture from Wageningen University in the Netherlands. He is specialized in architectural design decision support, using building performance simulation and monitoring techniques. Through his PhD in Architecture and Building Engineering at UCLouvain in Architecture et climat Laboratory he joined the IEA SHC Task 40 on Net Zero Energy Solar Buildings and as a Visiting Scholar in the Architecture Department of the Architecture College of Texas A&M University. His research focuses on building performance in the architectural context in general, and the use and optimization for decision-support of sustainable buildings in particular. Specific topics he has been working on include: design tools in the early stages of the design process; high performance buildings (Passive House and Zero Energy Buildings); parametric analysis and performance optimization of green buildings, life cycle assessment (embodied energy) and regenerative design; bioclimatic architecture and buildings performance in hot climates; energy efficiency, thermal comfort, indoor environmental quality, energy simulation, rating systems, performance auditing and liability.

Dr. Attia is the author of the book Regenerative and Positive Impact Architecture: Learning from Case Studies and the author of the book, Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB): Concepts, frameworks and roadmap for project analysis and implementation. He is an active member in ASHRAE, IBPSA, SBSE and USGBC, serves as a reviewer for eight international journals beside PLEA and IBPSA conferences. He published more than 60 peer reviewed publications in books, journal papers and conferences.

Shady Attia has been teaching doctoral, graduate and undergraduate level classes on Sustainable Architecture and Building Technology and has been involved in workshops, studios or classes related to these fields. He has been and is supervising research and thesis work for undergraduate and graduate students in architecture, building technology and mechanical, civil and environmental engineering. As part of his non-institutional activities, he has been hired as LEED Accredited Professional and building simulation consultant for design projects for housing and commercial buildings and as an expert for building commissioning. He is an active member and Faculty Member of the United States Green Buildings Council (USGBC) and International Energy Agency (IEA) committees.

He worked with several governments for building efficiency programs as well asgreen building councils and building design and energy consulting companies. He provided consultation and technical support for several LEED and High Performance Building Designs in Belgium, France, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Qatar, Switzerland and Djibouti.
